“Nostalgia for Light” by Davor Sanvincenti is a kinetic sound installation that evokes lost constellations—celestial formations no longer visible because their light faded long ago. Though physically still present, these stars exist only in the “memory” of the universe.
The installation is set in the park in front of the Art Pavilion in Zagreb, where glowing spheres suspended among the treetops simulate constellations. Their slow, almost imperceptible movement shifts position each hour, continuously forming a new image of the sky. The spheres move at varying speeds and directions, guided by programmed electromotors.
The soundscape of the installation consists of four channels of ambient composition—a blend of NASA recordings and night sounds, generated in the SuperCollider software as random time-harmonic sequences.
On a conceptual level, the work is an homage to invisible stars and a meditation on memory: can we remember something we have never experienced? The installation challenges the boundaries of perception and remembrance, offering a cinematic, monumental experience in public space that is—just for a moment—endless.
