Exhibition Opening “Dragutin Domjanić – Exegi monumentum”
How do you commemorate a poet who has already raised his own monument in words?
The exhibition “Exegi monumentum” presents Milivoj Šegan’s proposal for a memorial to Dragutin Domjanić, conceived for Dragutin Domjanić Square in Sesvete. The title itself, taken from Horace’s line Exegi monumentum aere perennius – “I have raised a monument more lasting than bronze” – opens the question of the relationship between the poetic work, public space and collective memory.
Domjanić’s name is today permanently inscribed in the identity of Sesvete, and the proposed memorial represents an attempt to express that memory in physical space as well. But it also raises a broader question: how do we today commemorate people whose works have already outlived their time?
Because Domjanić has already raised his most lasting monument. He made it out of words.
