Exhibition Opening “Dragutin Domjanić, A Century and a Half”
Dragutin Domjanić (1875–1933) is one of the most important Croatian poets of the first half of the 20th century and one of the greatest poets writing in the Kajkavian dialect. His work strongly marked the cultural space of Prigorje, and his poems are recognisable for their lyricism, melancholy, love of his native region and exceptional musicality of language.
He was a lawyer, judge, writer, translator and cultural worker, but it was through poetry that he left his most lasting mark. His connection with Prigorje, and especially with Adamovec, left a deep imprint on his literary world as well.
Today his name is borne by the square in Sesvete where the Prigorje Museum is located. On the occasion of the 151st anniversary of Domjanić’s birth, the exhibition recalls a poet who raised his most enduring monument in words. A century and a half after his birth, those words still live in the language and the landscape from which they sprang.
