Visit to the apartment of Vjenceslav Richter and Nada Kareš Richter
The single-storey villa at Vrhovec 38 was once the home of the architect Vjenceslav Richter and his wife, the actress Nada Kareš Richter, and today it houses the Richter Collection and an exhibition space for contemporary art. Its history begins in 1980, when Vjenceslav Richter and his wife Nada Kareš Richter donated artworks and their family house with garden to the City of Zagreb with the intention of establishing a place where constructive art would be studied and young artists would gather, and also in order to encourage the spread of cultural content beyond the immediate centre of Zagreb.
In 1998 the Richter Collection was handed over to the management of the Museum of Contemporary Art, which marked the beginning of intensive work on the professional processing of Vjenceslav Richter’s artworks, as well as of close cooperation between the museum’s curators and the artist, aimed at creating the conditions for opening the collection to the public. At the donor’s initiative, a park was laid out in which sculptures were installed, and the ground floor of the villa was converted into an exhibition space, while the apartment was retained as an original setting. In the spring of 2000 the Collection was opened to the public.
The Richter Collection continuously hosts a cycle of temporary exhibitions entitled SintArt. The project itself grew out of Richter’s idea and proposal that the Collection should exist as an active place open to research and experiment, and as a space for cultural content that engages in dialogue both with artists and with the local community.
No registration is required to visit the apartment; simply take a walk to the Richter Collection.
