At the top of a mountain in Chile, one of the most advanced observatories of today has just been completed – the Vera C. Rubin Observatory. Equipped with the largest astronomical camera ever made, this observatory is starting to capture the night sky in a completely new way. In a guest lecture by Prof. Dr. Željko Ivezić, Director of the Vera Rubin Observatory construction, we will learn about the first glimpse into space through its lens. In his presentation, Prof. Ivezić will introduce these historic first data and reveal how Vera Rubin will change our understanding of the universe. Over the next 10 years, the observatory will capture the most detailed “digital film of the sky” ever, cataloging more than 40 billion objects and enabling research on dark matter, the structure of the Milky Way, asteroids, and cosmic explosions – while testing Einstein’s theory of gravity.
