The Paris Room of the Croatian School Museum, currently housed at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Zagreb due to the museum’s closure following the 2020 earthquakes, is an exceptionally valuable cultural and historical ensemble. It was created to represent the education system of the Kingdom of Croatia and Slavonia at the 1900 Paris World Exhibition.
The historicist furniture was crafted by students of the Royal School of Crafts in Zagreb, based on designs by architect Hermann Bollé. Watercolours depicting schools and cultural institutions were painted by some of the most prominent Croatian artists of the time, including Slava Raškaj, Oton Iveković, Celestin Medović, Bela Csikos Sessia, and others.
Displayed in the showcases are student works, photo albums of school games and scenes from everyday school life, as well as the Školovid—a map showing all schools in the kingdom. Today, the Paris Room is part of Croatia’s cultural heritage and has, for over 120 years, stood as a testament to the history of Croatian education. It also features the grand-prix medal awarded at the World Exhibition in which it was originally presented.
